Nanotechnology- Finding Proofs for Its Ancient Origin

Pagar Swati A and Suryawanshi Hemant K.

Ayurveda is one of the oldest system of medicines having great emphasis on promotion of health and prevention of diseases. In the growing era of medicine, Nanotechnology holds promises due to its novel drug formulation routes, site-specific action, better solubility, improved efficacy and reduced side effects. Bhasma, literally meaning ash, is unique ayurvedic herbo?mineral?metallic compounds in the size of nano dimensions. Systematic nano materialistic investigations on bhasmas are recommended for gaining the complete and reliable composition- processing – structure- effectiveness picture of these drugs. This review covers a combination of all aspects origin of bhasmas from ayurveda with its evidences point of view that were reviewed by some articles. Safety of ayurvedic bhasmas is also an important point that is focused in this review. Most of the review studies focus on characterization of bhasmas by ancient techniques but in this article, an attempt is made to focus on benefits of amalgamation of modern and ancient techniques for preparation and characterization of bhasmas.
