Abstract:

Phytochemical compounds obtained from the medicinal plants have effective therapeutic applications both in the pure form of compounds or as standardized extracts. So far, these compounds are not evaluated scientifically or used to their best potential and demand detailed studies. Thus, the present study emphasis screening of phytochemicals and the antimicrobial properties of Tecoma capensis belonging to the family-Bignoniaceae and Alstonia scholaris which belongs to the family-Apocyanaceae. The crude plant powder and stem bark powder extracts were considered for the analysis. All the three solvents of stem bark extracts were tested against two gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and two gram negative bacteria (Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli) using sterile disk method. Ethanol extracts of Tecomacapensis and Alstonia scholaris showed the highest inhibition zone (8 mm) and lowest inhibition zone (4mm) was found in aqueous and methanol extracts. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and phenols. Based on our analysis, we conclude that due to the potential to fight against human disease caused by some microbial pathogens, these plant extracts can be used to discover the bioactive compounds which  may leads  for the development of new pharmaceutical research studies.
