<title>SYNTHESIS, SPECTRAL CHARACTERIZATION AND DNA BINDING STUDIES OFDINUCLEAR COPPER (II) COMPLEXES WITH 1, 10-PHENANTHROLINE </title>
<abstract>The mononuclear copper(II) complex, Cu(phen)(H lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan O)(NO lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  (1) has been obtained by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline with Cu(NO lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan .3H lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan O in methanol solution .The complex reacts with mono anionic ligands Cl lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan , Br lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan , I lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan  and CH lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan O lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan  in methanolic solution to form the stable binuclear complexes [Cu(phen)(µ-X)(H lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan O)] lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan  (NO lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan ) lessThan sub greaterThan 2 lessThan /sub greaterThan . Where, X = Cl lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan (2), Br lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan  (3), I lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan  (4), and CH lessThan sub greaterThan 3 lessThan /sub greaterThan O lessThan sup greaterThan - lessThan /sup greaterThan  (5). These complexes were characterized by electronic, IR, ESR, magnetic moments and conductivity measurements. The electrochemical behaviour of these complexes has been investigated by using cyclicvoltammetry. The interactions of these complexes with calf thymus DNA were investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. Electronic absorption data suggest that the complexes bind DNA via intercalation.</abstract>
