EVALUATION OF ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES OF N-HEXANE FRACTION OF CYATHEA NILGIRENSIS HOLTTUM
The plant Cyathea nilgirensis Holttum belong to the family Cyatheaceae. It is endemic to South India and 13 cm in diameter. The hexane extract of C. nilgirensis which was fractionated in order to obtain pure compound. With the help of TLC, LCMS and NMR, spectrum a bioactive compound was identified with its molecular weight 279.2. This bioactive compound was tested for anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities. The plant posses both antibacterial as well as antifungal activities. When it was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity on mice , the group IV showed significant decline in inflammation and exhibited better results compared to all the groups. This indicates that at particular dose, the bioactive compound exhibits the anti-inflammatory activity. When compared the results obtained from the IV group had better activity and suppression of edema was more effective than standard diclofenac sodium. Hence this evaluation reveals that the plant C. nilgirensis exhibits anti-inflammatory activity.
